Confection

Inspired by daily life under lockdown, my piece was completed in colouring pencil on mount board. Under the confines of domesticity, many have taken to baking as a way to pass the time. While turning to confectionery during this pandemic may be viewed as a silver lining of isolation to some, others may interpret this choice of subject matter in a darker sense. The dramatically overspilling composition of my piece suggests an ominous element of fixation. Whilst being in quarantine has lead some to baking, the same boredom is what has lead many others to turn to food as a coping mechanism. Sugary foods present the duality of individual lockdown experience. Some may be reminded of the highlights of self-isolation, though others look at this piece as considered through a lens of stress and guilt.
